Dynamics of spontaneous emulsification

چکیده
We present a model for spontaneous emulsification resulting from a transiently negative interfacial tension between water and oil regions, which may be achieved under conditions of strong adsorption of surfactant molecules to the interface. While our approach builds on a linear stability analysis, it addresses the essential non-linear coupling of surface growth to the diffusion flux of surfactants to the interface. We consider a large drop of oil of radius R embedded in a dilute surfactant solution and predict that undulations develop with a characteristic wavelength I*, which at long times t obeys I* ~w t~/~This suggests that the size of the droplets created spontaneously at the interface scales as f(/~, where to is a diffusion length which is comparable to R under steady state diffusion conditions. We discuss the regimes of applicability of our results to various experimental systems.

Formation and stability of Vitamin E nano-emulsion based delivery systems by spontaneous emulsification method: Glycerol as a co-solvent
There is considerable interest in using nano-emulsions (NEs) as delivery systems for lipophilicbioactive ingredients. In this study, the influence of G on the properties of vitamin E (VE) enriched NEsprepared using spontaneous emulsification (SE) method, were investigated. The particle size and optical clarityof the NEs depended strongly on the co-solvent presence, absence, an...
متن کاملFerulic Acid Lecithin-Based Nano-Emulsions Prepared by Using Spontaneous Emulsification Process
Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid), an effective component of medical plant, is a phenolic acid with low toxicity that can be absorbed and easily metabolized in the human body. The solubility of Ferulic Acid (FA) is very low in aqueous solutions which can cause problem in preparation of pharmaceutical products, but it can easily be dissolved in oil/water interface of <...
متن کاملDispersion of oil into water using lecithin-Tween 80 blends: The role of spontaneous emulsification.
Lecithin-rich mixtures of the nontoxic surfactants lecithin and Tween 80 are effective marine oil spill dispersants, but produce much higher oil-water interfacial tension than other, comparably effective dispersants. This suggests interfacial phenomena other than interfacial tension influence lecithin-Tween 80 dispersants' effectiveness. The interface between seawater and dispersant-crude oil m...
متن کاملTowards a consistent mechanism of emulsion polymerization—new experimental details
The application of atypical experimental methods such as conductivity measurements, optical microscopy, and nonstirred polymerizations to investigations of the 'classical' batch ab initio emulsion polymerization of styrene revealed astonishing facts. The most important result is the discovery of spontaneous emulsification leading to monomer droplets even in the quiescent styrene in water system...
متن کاملSome Physicochemical Remarks on Spontaneous Emulsification of Vitreal Tamponades
The importance of gravitational instability in determining the emulsification of vitreal tamponades is discussed. Theoretical results and numerical simulations indicate that the spontaneous formation of water-silicon oil is a rare event and that the very low concentration of surface active agents cannot justify the systematic formation of emulsions. The gravitational instabilities seem to play ...
